Pet Portraits: Our Furry Family Members

If you are a pet lover, then you get it. If you're not... well, you probably won't understand. But for those of us whose hearts melt when Fido gives us the eye, then you'll get why it's special to have a pic or two of...and with...your devoted sidekick. I offer Pet Mini Sessions to serve this fun and sweet objective for families with pets. If you are participating in an upcoming session, or are thinking about it in the future, here are a few points to consider:

Appearance

If your pet is lucky enough to have a routine visit to the groomer, then this is a great opportunity to maximize that investment! Try to plan their next grooming just prior to, or within a few days of, their session. This is totally a personal preference as to how you like your pet to look, and not a requirement. However our thoughts would be, "Why not?!" A nice freshen-up of some kind makes everyone feel special, pets and people! And don't forget to give them a real good brushing just before arriving for your session.

Props

Pet Mini Sessions are only 15 minutes. So that being said, it is best to keep props or costumes to a minimum. However if it's winter, and you have adorable matching sweaters... you better not leave those at home!! If you prefer your pet to be photographed with their collar on, then by all means let's do it! If everyone is comfortable without the collar, that is fine too. A special toy, a blanket, or anything that is calming and comforting for your pet is also welcome. Only remember our timeline. We will try to incorporate all we can!

Treats/Toys

I'll have some squeaky toys and treats on hand, but you are welcome to bring any favorites. Pets should be well fed prior to arriving at their session. Treats may or may not be used during our time together, but I will have some on hand, just in case. Please feel free to bring any of your pet's favorites. If your pet has a special diet, please consider bringing treats that are acceptable for them.

Energy & Exercise

Every pet is unique. Consider the habits and customs of your special pet, and plan accordingly. If your little guy is a young or highly energetic dog, or tends to have anxiety issues in a new environment, perhaps going for a short walk or playing catch for a bit just prior to their session would help burn off some of that extra energy.

People + Pets

If you are planning to be in the photographs also, consider wearing neutral colors, or muted tones. If your outfit matches your pet's collar or a prop from home, that's great too! Don't forget that black and white clothing will show hair and fur more readily...and may not be your very best choice, depending of the color of your pet. I'll have a lint roller for the inevitable strays, but these are some things to think about when choosing your attire. And DO take all the same care to prepare yourself that you are taking to prepare your pet! Don't forget... this is going to be fun!!

Posed or Candid?

Yes. Both. And the order in which we do them will depend greatly upon your pet. I'll be looking to you to help handle your animal, and also for gaining that attentive look. While I can get an animal to look my way, there is something about that eye-to-eye connection with their special person that brings their personality right to the surface! I'll have some cards at the session for you to jot down special words that cause your pet to sit up and take note. These words and commands, clickers, rattles, bells, treat bags, and the like will be used along with candid interaction with you to generate as many unique images as possible in our 15 minute session.

Final Thoughts

A pet mini session is a great way to capture some special photos of your comrade. Try to incorporate as many of the suggestions as possible in preparing for your session, and we will have a great time together! Please arrive for your appointment 5-10 minutes early to give your pet time to survey their surroundings and settle in a bit so that we can start your session promptly. Don't forget mini sessions are scheduled back-to-back, so we will have to finish promptly as well. Above all, come with the goal of having fun! Your pet has a unique personality and we are here to bring it out!
